Motherliness, 2016

Enamel on linen
28"x35" (70x90cm)
As viewed from above this is the abstract representation of a coronated sovereign, in this case the Mother Goddess-Queen, with the one red sphere symbolizing her crown, gold as the scepter and the second red sphere acting as her orb. The scepter is generally considered to epitomize authority over an area signified by the orb. There is actually a further meaning. The scepter and the orb represent the activity of the two principles, masculine and feminine. The masculine principle is always symbolized by a straight line (a scepter, a caduceus, a spear, a sword, a pillar, a tree) while the feminine principle is symbolized by a curved line (any hollow or rounded object — a sphere, a vase, a bowl, a chasm or a cave). Holding the scepter and the orb signifies a superior understanding of the two principles and illustrates that one has the power to operatethem together.
