The painting represents a vital and formative principle of life — omnipresent light (yellow colour that is strongly established in a backdrop of blue). Know to alchemists as the "lumen naturae", the light within each life is the light that can speak to us and to the light of our own awareness. Shining through us, thislight fulfills us and we are fulfilled in its revelation.This sacred light is epitomized as the androgynous Mercurius, the soul guide with his shining torch that lights the way, the scintillating fire of nature. Lumen naturae is also personified in Mercurius, who in turn is the messenger of light and the key element of transformation, but only for those with the highest aspirations.
