The idea of this painting represents the theory by Kandinsky about the expressiveness of colours in abstract art as they apply to a compositional structure. As forthe theory, the artist connects two contrasting colours, blue and yellow, which in Kandinsky's mindset emphasized differences such as cold and warm, dark and bright, immersed inside and sociable, calm sky and fertile land. Following the concept of contrast, the artist introduces horizontal and vertical dimensions, connecting two genres. It's widely known that vertical formats work better for portraiture and horizontal for landscapes.
