Jack-o-Latern, 2016

Enamel on linen
28"x32" (70x80cm)
The term "jack-o-lantern" was first applied to people, not pumpkins, and meant a man with a lantern after the Irish guy named Jack. Later it was used to reference the mysterious lights seen at night over swamps. Centuries after, science explained that it was gases from decomposing plantsthat ignited as they came into contact with oxygen. To create both mystery and fun, the artist paints a blue lantern that associates with the Blue Lantern Corps, a fictional organization of American comics. Their powers are based upon the emotional spectrum of hope: "Elsewhere, a flicker of hope will shine from deep space, like a lighthouse warning the ships away from the rocks. The blue light will hold the line in spirit if not in strength". With this colour choice the painting inspires a different andlighter meaningof Halloween.
