The painting represents the belief that everything in the universe consists of two forces that oppose and compliment each other at the same time.The greater the tension between these opposite poles, the greater the libido (creative power and life energy). The same conception is involved in the symbol of Tao, where the opposing principles are represented by black and white spiral divisions of a circle. The artist illustratesthis phenomenonvertically. The black portion(yin, female principle) contains white whereas the white portion (yang, masculine principle) contains black. Thus yin generates yang and vice versa. Energy manifests in a continuum and equilibrium between these two opposites.
